And being thus born, I did not begin the world, as other children are wont, with crying; but

straight perched up and smiled on my mother. Nor do I envy to the great Jupiter the goat,

his nurse, forasmuch as I was suckled by two jolly nymphs, to wit, Drunkenness, the daughter

of Bacchus, and Ignorance, of Pan.

Naissant dans un endroit si délicieux, vous jugez bien que je ne commençai pas à vivre par

pleurer: tant s'en faut; à peine ma mere fut-elle accouche de moi, que je me mis à lui rire

comme une petite folle. au reste, je n'envie point à Jupiter l'honneur d'avoir eu une Chevre

pour nourrice, puisque deux Dames des plus galantes m'ont donné la mammelle: l'une est

Methé, fille de Bacchus; l'autre, Apœdie, fille de Pan: vous les voyex l'une & l'autre à ma

suite.
